As I was reading my tweets this morning I saw an interesting top shared by @ltaloi. I wasn’t quite satisfied with the hierarchy so I did some additional research and I came up with this top (although I am sure that others have done this before me :)) ). I searched the wikipedia for an hierarchy of countries’ population and I found this. I extracted the countries in the first top and joined them together in an excel worksheet. After a simple operation I have obtained the Internet Usage Hierarchy considering also the total population of each country. As you can probably see there are 3 tables in the file and in everyone it’s a different hierarchy.

Simply because China is no 1 in the first two tops, that doesn’t mean it’s the best online market possible. Also the internet cannot be considered a primary advertising channel and its reach is limited to aproximately 13,5% of the population. Although it’s ranked fifth by number of internet users, when dividing it by the total population you can find out that almost 60% of the population uses internet and this could mean that internet really is a very good media and in the same cluster we find South Korea, USA, France, Japan and Germany. In a second cluster we can include Russia, Brazil and China and finally the third cluster has only one member, India. So you see that China is on this new hierarchy on the 9th spot out of ten and that is the exact spot that UK has in the firs top.
Of, course everybody already knew all these numbers (ok, maybe not everybody) but it is very important how anybody uses them. Facts like these correlated with a simple demographic study could in fact offer a much better view of the internet usage and its’ role as a touchpoint. So, my advice to anyone who thinks about doing any online business – TRY THIS AT HOME! It’s easy and it’s fun! And if you are familiar with the SPSS (some of you might still remember 🙂 ) you can find very interesting things about a sometimes overrated media called The INTERNET!

Where is Romania in the graphic? I thought it had one of the biggest internet penetrations in Europe.
Adrian Monoranu a zis
@credit pfa: we are not even close to the top 10. I think our total number of internet users is under 8 mil. The percentage is about 33% so we might be a liiiiittle bit closer on that scale. Anyway, like I previously said, the demographics are also important and of course what people are doing while surfing the web.

Vezi ca noi mai suntem doar 21.5 milioane de locuitori dupa INS. Iar la numar de utilizatori de internet cifra e undeva pe-acolo,in mare, insa depinde foarte mult ce masori exact.
Acuma observ: care-i faza cu scrisul in engleza?:)

@Ionut Oprea: It’s true. Measuring needs to be very specific but every research needs a starting point and this could be it. 😉 I chose to write in english because of some idiots who had a fight on my blog and then blamed me for that. So, from now on, if they wanna fight, they have to do it in english. :)) At least, let them make an effort.

I recall it being quoted around 55% of population, or roughly 12 million.

OH, but this is quit simple, from now on they will copy and paste all the shits writed in english from the web.
i hope i didn’t give any ideas to those…

Comeon Mono… The real cause of you writing in english is that fights in english don’t look that tough like fights in romanian do. Maybe it’s because we are all used to hear nasty stuff in english thanks to the american movie industry. I stumbled with this problem myself last summer, when I worked in the US. Almost got into a fight with my employer just because what I had said did not seemed that big of a deal to me. Maybe you should post an article about the changes a marketing message suffers when translated in another language… Take that into consideration! 😉

Are u sure about the numbers?

P.S: About writting in English, I’ve sent you my opinion on Twitter.
Eah, in English it’s more interesting, you’ve got a bigger audience, but it’s strange to switch from english to romanian, then back to english…
Adrian Monoranu a zis
@Marius Sescu: Different sources, different numbers. It’s not that important here. My point was to show people that research is easy and could show interesting facts. Anyone can do this at home, if you catch my drift. 😉
